Autism: Searching for the Light
Autism is more prevalent than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Parents all over the country are struggling to cope with the fact that most school systems aren't fully prepared to deal with children with autism. A large school district like the Los Angeles Unified School District has only two autism specialists, in a district with over 85,000 special needs children.
UCR is seeking to fill that void with the new SEARCH (Support, Education, Advocacy, Resources, Community and Hope) center, founded by Jan Blacher of the School of Education. The SEARCH center is dedicated to helping the families of children with autism, particularly low-income and Spanish speaking families who have been underserved.
The SEARCH center is doing innovative work, but they need your help. To continue to provide services to families with autistic children, donations are needed. There are a number of different ways to give, via UCR's Giving page.
